This article is based on my book Markat, farkut ja sukkahousut (Marks, Jeans and Tights), which was published in 2020. The book deals with the illegal trade, “trokaus” in Finnish and “fartsovka” in Russian, practiced by many foreign tourists in the Soviet Union during the period of 1960’s to 1980’s. One of the basic commodities of the illegal trade were Western clothes, which were especially the object of dreams for many young Soviet citizens. This article analyzes the causes of the illegal trade and describes how the illegal trade originated and evolved, and finally ceased. In addition, the article explores the people behind the trade.
